I was given an old fax to tear down, and this was the most useful thing I could come up with at short notice...
This old 1994-6 FAX was full of custom FPGAs so was totally useless for anything hackable, plus the thermal printer was cooked.
Introducing: "The wind up FAX light"
It works really well for what it is, read the blog here

Uses for an old FAX - The FAX Light
Re: Uses for an old FAX - The FAX Light
I should see if it will charge a USB phone. Will need contiunous winding though...
Re: Uses for an old FAX - The FAX Light
Supposed it bepends on the milliamperes it can output. iPhones are picky about charging on any less than their required minimum..
Re: Uses for an old FAX - The FAX Light
It seems to output around 2A short circuit, so at 5V it's 400mA at a good "wind". I am about to test it with my HTC and see how it goes.
Re: Uses for an old FAX - The FAX Light
Most android phone will charge in a 500ma charger but the iPhone tend to like 1000ma or better and the iPads need even more.
I've got a very similar motor from photocopier. Might put this one on the soon list.
