Macro Photography Rig - II

Post by parkview » Sat Mar 26, 2016 3:15 pm

You can read more about my first Macro rig here: http://www.bdug.org.au/project/macrorig/about

There where a few issues with it:
  • small photographic stage/area
  • the LED lighting isn't very tall, so large objects could be darker near the top
  • insects where mounted on the moving stage, so they would bounce around when the stage moved up and down

This version (as move have down ahead of me), will have the object on a seperate stage and the camera will move back and forth. This might allow photographs of 10cm sized objects.

BOM:
  • 3mm MDF
  • 300mm x 70mm x 35mm pine
  • 300mm x 150xx x 15mm pine board
  • NEMA17 stepping motor
  • 3D printed parts: motor mount, ballscrew to stage adaptor, six feet
  • laser cut parts
  • four x M6 x 40mm bolts
  • four x M4 x 15mm bolts
  • ballscrew with bearing mounts
  • Raspberry Pi 2
  • Adafruit RPi Motor Hat

I find the design stage an interesting iterative process. Once I can get a hand drawing down on paper, then I can have a go at transferring it into Design Spark Mechanical. Even then, it might go through a few iterations as I come up with further improvements and ideas on how it might all fit together.

Here is the design of the rotating stage and LED stand:

I do like laser cut 3mm MDF. It clips together beautifully and has a tight (but not too tight), fit. No glue needed. Then it's just a matter of exporting each section in Plan view as a dxf file and seconds later it's all cut out:

Below is the current macro rig setup. It now has a micro-switch end stop and code in place for it:
