Diane found an online photo of this Elf door a few days ago:

I magnified the photo a bit and started making measurements off the screen and created a Design Spark Mechanical drawing of it:

Here is a zoom in on the top gable:

It prints out in three sections:

  1. Door
  2. Door Frame
  3. Gable

I might add a 20mm wall stand off for it later.

I had some PLA based wood filament (Cherry Wood), lying around, so I thought I would print it out using that. I did a few test prints first and find that it's quite leathery feel too it. For example, the door is 56mm wide by 136.5mm high and 3.25mm thick. Pure PLA would be quite stiff, but this is can bend like a bit of tough rubber. I bet an elf couldn't bend it though :)

Ok, the first two parts have been printed. The door frame will be printed tomorrow night:

I was surprised how well some of the finer 1mm wide parts on the gable came out.

Nice One! Is that Cherry Wood a blended wood filament or just the colour?

no, it's made of wood dust: http://www.bilby3d.com.au/DispProd.asp?ProdID=FIL175WdChr and yes, it does smell of wood when being printed. As above, it's no good for thin things, but the gable above came out really well and solid too.

The Elf door is now fully assembled:

I was going to use a thin sheet of perspex, but ended up just printing out some 1mm (5 layers) of translucent green PLA for the windows.

Maybe Elves might leave a gift of a Smarty on the door step when Granddaughters are around?

Now, where is an Elf Cam when you need one?

Diane scratched out a rough drawing and I quickly drew it up in Design Spark Mechanical and laser cut it out:

24mm high, and 30mm wide. Cut out of 3mm MDF.
