DFN1006-3 SMD Breakout PCB

This afternoon Hack-a-Day had a posting from someone that created a discrete component DIP8 555 timer PCB that's just a bit bigger than the IC: https://hackaday.com/2021/05/11/smalles ... 555-timer/ Just yesterday I was pondering on what kind of component size that was smaller than a SOT-23 as sometimes it's just too big.

Welcome to the DFN1006-3 footprint. It turns out you can get transistors and MOSFETs in this diminutive 1mm wide by 0.6mm deep and 0.4mm high package! This is just a smidge bigger than a 0402 resistor.

For a challenge, I created a DFN1006-3 SMD Breakout PCB. It came in at 6.9mm x 9.55mm and smaller than a dual row 3 pin 2.54mm pinheader:

I used 0402 resistors and LED and on the back, I placed a huge 0805 power diode. I could go smaller, but I couldn't easily find a 200V diode in a 0402, or even 0603 footprint:

I ordered some N-MOS PMZ290UNE2YL and P-MOS PMZ350UPEYL MOSFETS from LCSC to test the board out. They are rated at being able to switch 1 to 1.2A at 20V, pretty incredible

Hmm, in the past JLCPCB doesn't like making PCB's smaller than 15mm x 15mm. But allowing for a 0.1mm V-Cut kerf, I can fit 140 of these into less than 10cm x 10cm PCB, so five panels will give me 700 breakout boards. I am most probably only going to use 10 or so in my life?

I held off on submitting this for production so I could submit a few other PCB designs at the same time. It's cheaper this way. During the wait, the SOT-23 Breakout PCB's arrived and while building a few of them, I realised that there was no room to write what kind of MOSFET was being soldered into place.

I have redesigned the PCB to be twice as wide, so as to leave some white space to write the MOSFET/Transistor details down. I also added a SOT-23 foot print on the other side, so one board can do both jobs. Now I only get 280 PCB's, but they will be routed instead of V-Cut

The writing space is 3.8mm x 9.5mm, so I will have to practice my hand writing!

With feedback from my SOT-23 breakout PCB, in that I need a space to write on the breakout PCB what MOSFET is soldered into place, I redesigned the PCB for a small 3mm x 9mm blank area. I then realised I could incorporate a SOT-23 mounting pads as well. This now gives me a 2 in 1 breakout PCB - bonus!

Lets have some juicy photos of the end product, below, is an example of my favourite AO3400 and AO3401 3.3V logic level SOT-23 MOSFETs

I have purchased some PMZ290 and PMZ350 DFN1005 MOSFETs from LCSC and carefully hot aired them along with 0402 gate and pull-up/pull-down resistors into place:

They are so small, they will easily fit into the 2.54mm spaced pin header holes - ball point pen for scale:
