Hi All,

I picked an Anycubic Photon S SLA printer from Anycubics Ebay Store last week. These printers are now sub $700 and comes with 250ml of resin.

While I don't have a heap of photos at the moment the resolution is pretty damn impressive. 0.05mm as the default slicing resolution with it stated highest resolution is 0.010mm with the LCD fixing 0.047mm pixel resolution from the UV source.

Cons:
  • Resolution, Resolution, Resolution - did I mention the Great Resolution?
The build time, while is similar to the FDM printers we have it will print all layers in parallel so you can load up your build plate and it will take the same time if printing 1 or more items
  • The resin stinks so best for an outside room /workshop not in the main house.
    The Cleanup process is messy.
Resin can be costly however very little is used during the print process and most can be re-used So depends on the size of the model being printed.
I'll leave you with this morsel of a print I did to test things out and with a pen laid along side for size comparison.

one thing Ive found is the resin downs like the cold weather, I need to look at a heater or keep inside the house to keep it over 20Deg when printing. currently its in the outside laundry so is chilli there.

Where there any internal supports needed when printing the clear objects?

That is awesome!

What does the resin cost? Also how long can you leave the resin for once opened?

Costs vary depending on manufacturer, type of resin and of course shipping. I found an Australian resin manufacturer, https://Monocure3d.com.au and have been using three of theirs, grey, clear and white, where I use their CYMK pigment set to get any colour I need. Add pigment to the white I get an opaque colour, Add pigment to the clear I get a transparent colour. The Grey I use by itself as is a good finish for miniatures and lets you really see the details, like in the photo above of the skeleton warrior.

I also have some flexible resin I want to play around with. Seems other users are adding 10-20% to their normal resins to get a less brittle resin.

I found a cheeper Chinese manufacturer that is based on soybean and cost me $22/0.5l to land. Works very well, doesn't smell, so may use more of that if prices stay the same when I next need to refill.

Manufacturers recommended shelf life is 12 months, but they say will also last longer, all depends how its stored, i.e. dark cool place.

From memory no internal supports, however you can see some dimples on the surface and had external supports

As a follow up to the question on how long the resin lasts....

I did a print the other day with resin I had left in the vat for nearly a year, printed no problems at all! The resin just needed a good stir as the pigment had settled in the vat, same reason why you need to shake the bottle!
