Here is a great tutorial on doing text in FreeCAD.

Hi BeJay,

always goods to know. One never knows if FreeCAD might enter back into my life as a working tool.

I am still using DS Mechanical V:1 and a few weeks ago, I too had a need to enter text into my part: http://forum.swmakers.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=68&p=570#p569. There are a few tutorials around, but basicly I had to download and install Sketchup, generate the text in there and save the 3D text in it's native format (from memory, I had to use an older 2010? file version ), then import it into the current project.

It's a bit cumbersome, but doable. There is meant to be a method of using Inkscape, but I have yet to explore that technique.

Thanks.

I used inkscape when I first got my printer to do text, but this is so much easier and faster than that. Inkscape has a plugin that raises the text by x amount on the Z. Only outputs as stl, so some artifacts occur when trying to tinker with it in other software. I also used to use OpenSCAD, but still fiddly.

FreeCAD 0.16 is pretty good and runs like silk my x86 linuxmint box.

Thinking of getting an X-Carve next....

Hmmm, X-Carve, I like that. Very tempting. If you do go ahead, let us know how it goes.
