YAPP - PiCluster
YAPP - PiCluster
Yet Another Pi Project - introducing piCluster, my Grid Computing exploration system.

A 16 node Grid/Cluster that I'll be using to experiment with grid computing for my Quant trading, obviously not powerful, but will allow me to explore grid computing techniques associated with parallel computing and scaling. Plus I've always wanted a Beowulf cluster since I first came across them many moons ago when I had Gateway, but the hassle of setting up actual PCs was going to be a pain and I never got around to it. Screen is the 7" RPI touch screen with and additional RPi attached at the top of the case is my Master node so in reality 17 nodes.
Also it will also allow me to play around with clustering in a Unix environment and the use of Automated tools like puppet and Chef for automated config management.
My design so far, made out of clear 1/4 Acrylic aka perspex, both ends will act as handles but I haven't added the cutouts. Design allows for expansion to another 16 nodes easily if I want to down the track, all I have to do is replace the ends and add extra fans if required, probably overkill on the cooling, but I intend to overclock things. I still need to finish handles, Screen Mounts and Box Joints for the perspex.
The 16 nodes arrived today and assembled, I've tracked down supply and laser cutting of the perspex in Bunbury so will do a review on them when complete.
Next step is to get power and networking sorted along with configuring my master and then automating node rollout.

Re: YAPP - PiCluster
Design just about complete, Just need to finalise the Screen bracket as I've only roughed something in.
Everything else is pretty well done so will Export and do an initial layout for Cutting.

Re: YAPP - PiCluster
That is a lot of pi! Love to see how your cluster performs. It's something I've wanted to do too, but couldn't find a justifiable cause for SWMBO to allow the purchase
Re: YAPP - PiCluster
Finally got back to this and have sent final drawings off for laser cutting, hoping to have it all up and running before Curtin RoboFaire

Re: YAPP - PiCluster
I now have the panels back from laser cutting and Bunbury Plastics did a great job on the joints with the Kerf, however they forgot to do the engraving, bugger it!!! will look at doing with my Embalmer.
Big test will be tonight when I get home and start assembling. I will see if everything fits or not
Nice snug fit

Re: YAPP - PiCluster
Only just found this post. Well done with the design. Yes, that is a lot of RPi's! Looking fwd to seeing how it all performs.
Re: YAPP - PiCluster
I love it when a plan comes together, everything lines up (as it should)
However have hit a snag....all standoffs are M2.5 and I thought I had M2.5 nuts and screws etc, looks like I only had M2.0 doh!!! order placed!

That looks fantastic! Where does the PSU and switch sit?

PSU will be a PC one and will be external, same goes for switch, I tracked down a 24 Port 10/100 switch from work we don't use any more.
