Planter Boxes

Post by Jubbp » Sat Jul 14, 2018 6:15 pm

So I was asked to create (or buy - the challenge was put out there) a couple of planter boxes for the Patio

Perfect Maker project
Design it up in Fusion360
Recover some otherwise waste pallet wood
Put it all together.

Recycling old Pallets.
While breaking these pallets down, I reflected on the cost of the timber and the time we were using to process the pallets down to usable lumber.
It occurred to me that the money saved by using recycled wood will offset the new tool kit i bought :D :D

THanks Paul,
The design is a 1m cube but the final constructed dimension will depend on the the final dimensions of the lumber that we recycle.

At this point it’s looking like we will have enough.

So the plans changes slightly when I came across some big bearing boxes at work. I decided to use the box as the top planter section and save myself from having to build the entire design. The pic below shows the bearing box at the top and the frame I joined underneath it. Wheels for manoeuvrability around the patio depending on the weather. (also to get the trailer out to the front.

Cladding the outside of the planter with pallet wood to make it look a bit special.

Added the plastic liner and the top trims to back it look pro.

Finished and planted out with the herbs.

Another view of the lower shelf area. I have plans to make a vertical door that hinges at the bottom with a bolt at the top. Sophie (in the background) is annoyed I've moved the coriander out of reach. She just loves eating it.

Love the wheels. Plants on the move. Now, if you could add in a RC circuit and motors a herb garden could drive up to the door when you want to pick some

Thanks Paul. Yes I'm pretty proud of it.

There was a little design flaw in that I didn't taking into account the swing of the casters. I had to improvise the cut outs at the bottom. I thought about moving them in further but that would have made locking the castors impractical.

We could RC it or better still train the dog to collect the herbs for us.

they turned out extremely well! Well done Phil! I might have to do something like that myself.

What do you do for drainage?

Ummm. I had plans for drainage but didn’t put it in at the time. I can retro fit it now but the bed dries out quite quickly in summer. May be different when we get more rain
