Perth Curtin Robofair - 2014

Post by parkview » Mon Aug 25, 2014 9:07 pm

Hi all,

it's on again: 2014 Robofair is on Sunday November 30th 10-2pm and being held at the same place, the Bentley Curtin University: https://www.google.com.au/maps/place/Cu ... 870014444e

Last year Stephen and I attended with a small display. My wife and son had fun joining in helping out towards the end.

It's still early days, but one of the Robofair organisers might be coming down to visit us on the 13th of Sept. meeting. More when I have it, but can any interested people email direct, so I can organise a large enough area - and make sure the Insurance is all ok well in advance!

If your not interested in displaying anything, come along and check it all out, as it's a fun event. Lots of robots, drones, quadcopters, Lego and lots of STUFF!

Thanks.

Paul

Ok, some official info for the 2014 Curtin robotics event:

----------------

An annual celebration of everything robotic, Robofair has steadily grown, both, in the number of exhibitors who showcase cutting edge technologies as well as members of the Perth community who are curious to find out more about what is happening at this dynamic edge of Robotics.

Curtin University will be hosting the 6th annual Robofair on Sunday, 30 November 2015, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. So I take this opportunity to invite you to host a stall at this event. You may wish to use this opportunity to showcase a project of personal interest or something relating to your professional role.

As in previous years, the Engineering Pavillion (Building 215) will be the main venue for Robofair. While Robofair is happening in the Pavillion, the FIRST Lego League (FLL) competition and the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) will be happening around the corner. Robofair exhibitors will have an opportunity to check out these competitions over the course of the day and, competitors and their families will have the opportunity to check out Robofair.

Curtin Robofair is open to the public. It is of no charge to exhibitors or people attending the fair.
----------------

I have pre-ordered two x 4m x 0.7m tables and two pin-up boards. They have a website here: http://engineering.curtin.edu.au/outreach/robofair/

Last year it paid to get there early, so I will stay in Perth Sat. night and get there around 08:30 to grab the tables/site before anyone else. let me know if your interested (or if things have changed and you can't make it) in attending the event. So far I have four people interested in displaying.

Last year you could buy food and drinks at the local Uni cafe, but it was very busy, so it helps to BYO if you can.

As above, for those that are just interested in attending and not displaying gear, have a look at the onsite Robotic competitions: http://engineering.curtin.edu.au/outrea ... league.cfm and http://engineering.curtin.edu.au/outreach/robocomp.cfm

I'm still in to bring along a few things to show and tell. My son and his mates are in FLL this year, so this will be interesting all 'round ;)

Just an update on the Robofair.

Today I finally had a reply from the organiser. Yes, our application has been accepted and she confirmed the location (same as last year). We will have four tables and four pin-up boards:

I believe we have four attendees? If so then by my maths, that makes it a table each. If more people want to come along, then thats fine too.

She will send out maps and parking info late in the last week before the event.

Well that was a bit of fun! Wasn't a big turn out of makerspaces like last year, but still not bad ;)

Here is the timelapse of our area using the timelapse pi powered rig!

Thanks for the blog article Beau: http://bjblaster.homedns.org/blog/?x=en ... 201-095507 Love the video. What did you use to compile the jpgs into the video?

I have posted a blog on the SW Makers site: http://www.swmakers.org/blog/2014-curtin-robofair

A great day had by all! It was an early night to bed though.

Hey Paul,

I used a bit of software I wrote in gambas3 for Linux called TimeLapse Maker:

Image

It builds a list of files to use and then exports them to mencoder. Works a treat! I wrote it for my son who loves making stop motion movies but when you have 3500 frames a normal inline video editor can't quite handle it!

I then took this mp4 and loaded it into Kdenlive and added some music from http://incompetech.com/ to finish it off.

I alos used this to make my timelapse of "out of the window" at work if you haven't seen it it's here -> http://bjshed.better-than.tv/blog/?x=entry:entry131207-214443.

If you want to try it I'll package it up ;)

Thanks for the info. I had never heard of Gambas3 before. Nice to know that the BASIC language is still hanging in there :)

I to have played around with mencoder and aviconvert from the command line to convert my Pole-Cam and Rainbow-Pi jpeg images into a video file. Always interesting to see how other people do things.
